Affluenza?

So, I assume you’ve heard about that 16 year old rich kid who got all kinds of screwed up and drove hitting and killing 4 people.  His punishment?  10 years probation.  Yeah, I’m serious.  All because the judge agreed that the kid’s parents never taught him right from wrong.

The Star-Telegram wrote:

The 16-year-old [Ethan Couch] pleaded guilty last week to four counts of intoxication manslaughter and two counts of intoxication assault causing serious bodily injury. Killed were Breanna Mitchell of Lillian, whose car broke down the night of June 15 on Burleson-Retta Road; Hollie and Shelby Boyles, who lived nearby and had come outside to help Mitchell; and Burleson youth minister Brian Jennings, a passer-by who had also stopped to help.

The teen admitted to being drunk when he lost control of his pickup. He had seven passengers in his Ford F-350, was speeding, had a blood-alcohol level three times the legal limit, plus traces of Valium in his system, according to earlier testimony.

Two teens riding in the bed of the teen’s pickup were critically injured. Solimon Mohmand had numerous broken bones and internal injuries. Sergio Molina remains paralyzed and communicates by blinking his eyes, according to testimony last week.

They say he basically raised himself and that his parents are to blame for HIS actions.  I flat out don’t care if his parents were the worse in the world, the kid has a driver’s license and is responsible for his own actions.  Next, some idiot attorney is going to argue that since he was out of his mind on alcohol and drugs then he can’t be held accountable.  It’s like saying a meth head isn’t responsible when he or she gets too high and goes on a killing spree.  Affluenza… whatever.

I guess wealth really does buy you out of trouble.  This defense makes our judicial system a freaking joke.
